Helen embarks on a passionate affair with a man who has no idea what her secret identity is. Caught in the crosshairs when her lover falls victim to London’s dangerous underworld, Helen’s employer calls on Sam to protect her. Bingo, the owner of the guitar shop where Sam gets his guns, is played by Rat Scabies, a member of the classic punk band The Damned.

My review: Black Doves, streaming on Netflix My rating

8.5/10 Think of the great sentimental British Christmas movies like Love Actually and Last Christmas. Black Doves surprisingly has some of those festive moments in its six dramatic episodes. I say surprisingly because this British spy thriller has some very violent moments with shootings, executions and some very dark moments, but these scenes are almost comical or maybe like many others, I have become a little desensitized to violence in TV and movies.

Black Pigeons, skillfully directed by Alex Gabassi and Lisa Gunning and written by Joe Barton, stars Ben Whishaw, Keira Knightley and Sarah Lancashire, all at their best, playing very dark characters with double lives who work together and independently on a mission to solve the murder of a prominent Chinese diplomat. Playing a role very different from anything I have seen him play before, Ben Whishaw plays Sam Young, a friend of Helen Webb, played by Keira Knightley. These two unlikely trained assassins work for their ruthless boss Reid, played by Sarah Lancashire in another magnificent departure from her usual police inspector roles.

I suspect and hope we’ll see another Black Doves series, a quality production

Black Doves moves quickly with many interesting characters, including Helen Wallace’s husband, a powerful and ambitious politician who doesn’t know about his wife’s double life until the dramatic finale. Another supporting role I enjoyed was Catherine Hunter as Lenny Lines, another ruthless assassin recruiter. As I mentioned above, I was surprised by some of the lighter touches of snowy scenes, Christmas carols, and gift-giving around the tree, which I felt added another dimension to what could have been a very dark series.
