Story

Claire Beauchamp Randall, a nurse in World War II, is mysteriously transported back in time to Scotland in 1743. There, she meets a dashing Highland warrior and is drawn into an epic rebellion. Moore (the series’ creator), her crew decided to keep the Gaelic lyrics rather than translate them into English. This preserved the first-person narrative while showing Claire’s inability to understand Gaelic. This idea was suggested by producer David Brown, who said he had seen something similar in Skin Deep (1998), a foreign alternative film starring actor and singer Gustavo Goulart.

In the first half of the second season (which is set in France), some of the lyrics are in French. The second half of season two (which is mostly about preparing for war) adds a militaristic drum to the opening theme. Season four adds bluegrass fiddle and banjos, and some of the lyrics are sung in a Southern accent, as the season is mostly set in America. But things started to go downhill in seasons four and five. I’m not going to lie, but I feel like Sophie Skelton wasn’t meant to play Brianta.

They didn’t feel like characters. Instead, I felt like they were trying to be characters and failing miserably. There were times when everyone gave a pretty good performance in this series, but I felt like these two were lacking. Especially Sophie Skelton (Brianna). I love Lauren Lyle and her acting is impeccable.
